Bab al-Wastani

The eastern wall of Baghdad consisted of a thick wall of bricks supported by several towers and preceded by a deep trench connected to the Tigris and surrounded by a sanctuary. As for the gates of the eastern wall, they were Bab al-Moadham, Bab al-Dhafariah (Al-Wastani), Bab al-Halabah, Bab al-Basaliyah, and none of the doors remain standing today except Bab Al-Wastani near the mausoleum of Omar al-Suhrawardi, close to Sheikh Omar Street. The stature of the door is a high tower, almost cylindrical in shape, its circumference at the base is 57 meters, and it rises from the ground 14.5 meters. Its roof is an octagonal dome. On the northwestern side, it has a door whose width is 3 meters, topped by a pointed arch, and in front of it is an arch over the trench. As for the southwest side of the tower room, there is a door that leads to an arch larger and higher than the previous one, extending over the trench.
