Al-Kawaz Mosque

Al-Kawaz Mosque is located in Al-Mishraq district in Basra. It was built by Hassan Al-Daen Al-Abd Al-Salam from reeds in the year (920 AH – 1514 AD), but Sheikh Abdul Qadir bin Al-Sheikh Sari built it with stones in the year (930 AH – 1523 AD) and he called it Muhammad Amin Al-Kawaz, Sheikh of the Shadhili Order. The building of the mosque was renewed in the year (1140 AH – 1727 AD) by Sheikh Anas Bass Aayan, who built his minaret in Qashani and decorated it with simple geometric and floral motifs. The length of the lighthouse is (30) meters, ending with an onion.

The Al-Kawaz mosque is square in shape, the length of its side is about (60) meters. And he had spacious courtyards in which strangers stayed, and there was a small cemetery located in the northern corner of it. It includes the remains of Sheikh Muhammad Amin Al-Kawaz, and this mosque is considered one of the historical evidences in the city of Basra and one of its most important archaeological features,
