Al-Baraka Palace

It is also one of its annexes to the Caliph’s Palace. The building was built with a depth of 13 m below ground level and the area of Al-Baraka Palace is 180 m by 180 m. It consists of two floors, the upper floor has an area of 180 m by 180 m, and the lower floor is 123 / and a half by 123 and a half. The remaining part is the basement, while the upper floor is dilapidated. The main and important part of the palace is the circular pool surrounded by four main iwans, while the rest of parts are rooms for the sitting of the caliph’s entourage. The diameter of the pool is 62 m and its depth is 2 m. The water comes to it through the kahriz that was excavated from the eastern side of the city of Samarra. It is located exactly opposite the kahriz of water drainage which empties the pool from the water. The drain kahriz used to be closed so that the pool is filled with water and the caliph’s entourage. It is then a palace for convalescence, rest and recuperation. The Caliph used to bring singers and comedians to this pool, and the most famous of these comedians was Abu Al-Ibar, where the Caliph used to throw him in the pool and then catch him with a net. Abu Al-Abr said about that:

The king called me, threw me in the pool then caught me in the nets, as if I were of fish. Perhaps the best Abbasi poet who trusted us with his poetry

the beauty of Al-Mutawakil pool and the splendor of its construction, is al-Buhturi, in which he says: O you who saw the beautiful pool I saw, And the women, if their songs appeared
